A surface that remembers

Verdgini is the studio name of Akdim Ali, a painter working in Morocco. The paintings begin wet and stay unresolved for a long time: colour is poured and tilted, dragged with a blade, scratched back to the layer beneath, then painted over again. Nothing is sanded away. What is left is a surface that remembers every decision.

Colour arrives at full strength — madder, cadmium yellow, ultramarine, and a black that is never quite flat. Titles come afterwards, as a way of naming what the surface turned out to be: a cave, a storm, a window, a figure. The work runs between two poles that never fully reconcile, and that is the point: the monogram is severe and classical; the painting under it is not.

New work is posted first on Instagram, where the studio has shared paintings, studio shots and outdoor pieces since 2021.
